Hanju Seo (서한주)

Hanju Seo is a design engineer and sensing systems researcher working between London and Suwon. He builds sensing hardware and the software behind it for unstructured outdoor environments: farmland, woodland and open worksites, where people, machines and living things share the same ground. After graduating from the joint MA/MSc Innovation Design Engineering programme at Imperial College London and the Royal College of Art, he founded EarthCode Ltd. in 2024. His work has been supported by D&AD, Bentley Motors, Autodesk and Makerversity, and presented at the Dubai AI Festival.

He also farms. He looks after his family's small plot and hillside woodland in Korea, and the instruments he builds are usually tested there first. Most of his design decisions start from what works and what fails out in the field.

He calls this practice Reading the Living: learning to read what is on the ground and what is changing before deciding how to act on it. Most sensing systems assume walls, stable power and predictable infrastructure. Outdoor sites have none of these, and they matter more as the climate shifts. His aim is sensing hardware and software that let the people who look after land read it themselves, and keep the data it produces.
